Plant Care Guide

☀️ Light

Christmas Cacti prefer bright, indirect light. An east or north-facing windowsill is ideal, although they can tolerate some gentle morning or evening sunshine. Avoid prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

💧 Watering

Water when the top 2–3cm of compost feels dry to the touch. Water thoroughly, allowing any excess to drain away, and never leave the plant sitting in water. Reduce watering slightly after flowering, but don't allow the compost to dry out completely for prolonged periods.

🌡️ Temperature

These plants enjoy normal household temperatures of around 18–24°C during active growth. Keep them away from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and direct heat from radiators.

🌱 Compost & Feeding

Use a free-draining houseplant compost, ideally one suitable for cacti and succulents with added perlite or grit. Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Stop feeding during the flowering period and winter rest.

🌸 How to Encourage Flowering

With a little seasonal preparation, your Christmas Cactus can reward you with flowers year after year!

  • From early autumn, provide around 12–14 hours of uninterrupted darkness each night for approximately 6 weeks.

  • Keep the plant in a cooler room, ideally around 10–15°C, during this bud-forming period.

  • Water more sparingly while flower buds are developing, without allowing the compost to become completely dry.

  • Once buds appear, return the plant to its usual bright, indirect light and normal room temperature.

  • Avoid moving or turning the plant once buds have formed, as changes in conditions can cause developing buds to drop.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

After flowering, you can gently pinch or twist off a few stem segments at the joints to encourage a bushier, fuller shape and promote new growth. This is also a good opportunity to remove any damaged or unhealthy sections.

🐾 Pet Friendly

A lovely addition to pet-friendly homes, making it easy to enjoy a little seasonal greenery alongside your furry companions.

With a little seasonal care, your Christmas Cactus can become a festive favourite for many winters to come!
